On the Run - Week 10
Cornell remains No. 1, Army v Navy never disappoints, and some surprising results.

Welcome to On the Run. Here's what you need to know about what happened in college lacrosse this weekend, plus some little things that I loved. Quick and easy to read while you're on the run!
Today’s writeup in a snapshot 📸:
👀 The Headliner: Cornell Remains No. 1
🤝 Supporting Cast: Army v Navy goes to OT (again)
🎯 Quick Hits: Delaware’s Brendan Powers
📈 On the Rise: Loyola’s Mason Cook
🏆 Best of the Rest: Big Confusion in the Big East
👀 The Headliner: #1 Cornell Beats #4 Syracuse 17-12
The storyline that stole the show this weekend.
The most anticipated matchup wasn’t exactly a surprising result, as Cornell remains No. 1 after defeating the Orange.
CJ Kirst only needs six more goals to pass Payton Cormier (224) to become the NCAA’s All-Time leading goal scorer after posting a 5G, 3A statline on Saturday.
Ryan Goldstein had 8 points as well (3G, 5A) while I continue to be impressed with Cornell’s second midfield. With guys like Andrew Dalton, Ryan Sheehan and Ryan Waldman continuing to chip in a goal or two a game, it does a lot for this Cornell team.
Cornell continues to be the favorite to win it all, but anything can happen in the NCAA Tournament.
Owen Hiltz led the way for Syracuse with 6 points (4G, 2A) and was super impressive as a dodger while the first midfield combined for 10 points. But Payton Anderson and Joey Spallina combined for just 2 points.
Syracuse needs Finn Thomson back.
Thomson was averaging 3 points per game as the third starting attackmen alongside Hiltz & Spallina before suffering an upper body injury against Utah.
Anderson is doing an admirable job as a freshman to step up into that starting role recently, but I’d rather have Anderson provide a pop on the second midfield and have Thomson slide back into the starting role when healthy.
If Thomson can return this season, it provides a boost for an already good offense.
As for Syracuse’s defense, Jimmy McCool did not have a great day saving just 30% of shots, but Cornell is the best offense in the nation right now. The Orange will learn and grow from this, something that’s really good for them.
🤝 The Supporting Cast
The things that weren't maybe the star of the weekend, but still important.
1. #5 Army Beats Navy 12-11 in OT
This game never disappoints. It was the the fourth Army vs Navy matchup in the last ten games in this series to go to overtime.
Jackson Eicher was the hero with a righty jumpshot sweeping topside to win it for the Black Knights.
Rivalry overtime goals hit different.

Regardless of how much better Army or Navy is on paper, you can throw all of that out the window when they meet up during the season.
While the Midshipmen were defeated, I was still impressed with how they fought, and espicially the performances of Dan Daly (15 saves) and freshman Jack Ponzio (2G, 1A).
Navy and Army both have matchups against Loyola and Bucknell to end the season.
For Army, it’s a way to stay sharp going into the conference tournament while Navy needs to win at least one to make the tournament and build some momentum.
2. Lafayette Upsets #15 Boston University 11-9
The Leopards are on the come up.
It’s the first time Lafayette has won four Patriot League games in a single season, winning:
13-8 against Holy Cross
11-10 against Loyola
14-5 against Bucknell
11-9 against Boston University
But this win was the most impressive, and it came on senior day for Lafayette.
UPSET DUB 🙌

Riley Sullivan continues to be impressive, leading the offense with 4 points (2G, 2A) to bring his season points up to 65 (28G, 37A).
What’s most intriguing about the Leopards is that five of their six top point scorers are freshman.
So while losing the heartbeat of their offense in Sullivan will hurt next season, they’ll have a ton of experience and momentum.
🎯 Quick Hits
The weekend's standout plays, hustle moments, and everything in between.

Maryland’s Eric Spanos with the face dodge.

Delaware’s Brendan Powers with the spinning BTB.

Army’s Brayden Fountain with the toe drag.
📈 On the Rise
Spotlighting players and teams who are setting themselves up for big things ahead.
1. Loyola’s Mason Cook ✅
Cook was the first freshman this season to record 10 points in a game (5G, 5A), and the first Loyola freshman since Pat Spencer.
The righty has 10 goals in the past three games and looks to be a big part of the Greyhounds offense for the next few seasons.

10 POINTS FOR THE FRESHMAN!
Mason Cook with his fifth goal to add to five assists!

2. Duke’s Charlie Johnson 👿
This is long overdue, but Johnson has been a revelation for the Blue Devils this season. Becoming a full-time starter in 2025, Johnson held Owen Duffy to just two points on Saturday and is top 10 in the nation in caused turnovers (24), which leads the team.
Charlie Johnson had a huge game once again on Saturday 💪
4 ground balls & 5 caused turnovers to hold Owen Duffy to 2 points with four turnovers 🔥

3. Navy’s Liam Hurley ⚓️
Two of Hurley’s three points on the year came this weekend against Army.
The sophomore midfielder is seeing increasing playing time, and he had a really nice goal to start the 4th quarter, and then a beautiful assist to give Navy the lead late in the game.
To have your best game of your career in your first ever Army vs Navy game is impressive stuff.
🏆 Best of the Rest
We’ve covered most of the stuff that happened, but what slipped through the cracks?
ACC Results
#9 Notre Dame beat Virginia 12-7
#7 North Carolina beat #12 Duke 8-7
It looks like Virginia’s season is likely over. They are 0-3 in the ACC and just have Duke remaining on April 26. Even if they do make the ACC Tournament, it’s hard to imagine a world where they win it, which they would need to do to even have a shot at the NCAA Tournament.
Duke also hasn’t fully clicked this season, so in my mind, the only true contenders from the ACC are Notre Dame, UNC and Syracuse.
Big Ten Results
#14 Michigan beats #18 Rutgers 8-6
#8 Penn State beats #19 Johns Hopkins 10-4
#6 Maryland beats #2 Ohio State 13-8
What happened to Johns Hopkins? After starting the season 6-2, the Blue Jays have lost four straight conference games. It’s hard to see a world where they make noise in the conference tournament, and the same goes for Rutgers.
I think a lot of people expected the Terps to bounce back and beat Ohio State this weekend, myself included.
The Buckeyes have been playing great lacrosse, but were always due for a loss, and it’s probably a good reset for them anyways.
Ivy League Results
#10 Harvard beats UPenn 13-6
Yale beats #20 Dartmouth 21-12
#3 Princeton beats Brown 17-7
Nothing surprising, but it was good to see Leo Johnson (4G, 4A) and Chris Lyons (6G) get back on track for the Yale offense.
Big East Results
Providence beats Marquette 14-2
Villanova beats St. John’s 10-7
Denver beats #13 Georgetown 7-3
Confusing conference. I’ll have an opinion after the Big East tournament. I kinda hope Providence wins.
