👀 The Headliner: Ohio State Wins First Big Ten Championship

The storyline that stole the show this weekend.

For the first time in program history, the Buckeyes are the Big Ten champions since joining in 2015.

With a 10-8 win over Michigan in Ann Arbor, it wasn’t just the perfect way for Ohio State to win the conference, but it was the way that they did it that made it so special.

Down 8-5 with less than six minutes left in the game, the Buckeyes scored five straight goals, including three by Gannon Matthews to upend the Wolverines.

Caleb Fyock was once again rock solid in the cage, saving 12 shots for a 60% save percentage, including a big time save late in the game to secure the win for the Buckeyes.

Garrett Haas had 3 points (2G, 1A) while Ed Shean (2G) scored some clutch goals down the stretch.

Ohio State has earned a first round bye in the Big Ten Tournament, but could face a rematch against Michigan if the Wolverines beat Rutgers in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Michigan has won back-to-back Big Ten tournaments, and you know they’ll be itching to get a crack at the Buckeyes again.

We need the rematch.

🤝 The Supporting Cast

The things that weren't maybe the star of the weekend, but still important.

1. #12 Duke Beats #7 Syracuse 11-7

A huge game for NCAA Tournament implications, Duke came out on top against the Orange.

Eric Malever had 5 goals for the Blue Devils, but the story of this game was the defense and transition game for Duke.

Aidan Maguire showed why he’s regarded as one of the top transition short-sticks in the nation with 3 points (2G, 1A), including this flamethrower.

After not scoring in seven games, sophomore LSM Mac Christmas tallied his seventh of the year on a long range blast as well.

Charlie Johnson continues to play like one of the best defenders in lacrosse while Patrick Jameison was lights out with 13 saves.

Both of these teams have massive games coming up to solidify their status in the NCAA Tournament.

  • Duke vs Virginia (Sat, April 26 at 3pm)

  • Syracuse vs UNC (Sat, April 26 at 5pm)

2. Providence Upsets #16 Denver 10-6

The Friars clinch a Big East tournament berth with a massive win over Denver.

Leading 9-2 at the half, the Friars were in control of this one the whole way.

Ryan Bell, Jack Horrigan and Rhett Chambers all tallied four points in the win.

Led by a potent attack line of Bell, Horrigan and junior Richie Joseph, Providence was a team a lot of people thought could have their best season yet, and while they’re only 6-7, they look like a team poised to make a run at the Big East tournament title.

They thrashed Marquette 14-2 last week and handled a good Denver team this weekend, and have a ton of momentum heading into their regular season finale against St. John’s.

🎯 Quick Hits

The weekend's standout plays, hustle moments, and everything in between.

Navy’s Jack Nichtern with the swim move and score.

Duke’s Charlie Johnson with the yard sale!

📈 On the Rise

Spotlighting players and teams who are setting themselves up for big things ahead.

A disclaimer: I’ve already shouted out these three players below, but I feel like they deserve more love.

1. Garrett Haas (Attack - Ohio State) ‼️

Haas has been sensational this season for the Buckeyes. With 37 points on the year (23G, 14A), he opened the scoring for Ohio State and had the game-winning assist to Ed Shean to lift earn the program’s first ever Big Ten title.

Quick, crafty and two-handed, he’s not Michael Sowers, but his playing style is pretty similar.

2. Matt Jeffrey (Midfield - Notre Dame) ☘️

I said weeks ago that Jeffrey’s talent was so evident and it was only a matter of time before he started producing.

He’s producing.

He’s the difference maker for this Fighting Irish offense right now with his athleticism and ability to win one v one matchups. He’s going to be special.

3. Peter Buonanno (Attack/Midfield - Princeton) 🐅

Another highly-rated freshman recruit, Buonanno is another special talent.

With a playing style like Ryder Garnsey, Buonanno is as creative as they come and is starting to hit his stride.

He’s started the last six games for the Tigers from the midfield and recorded his first career hat trick in a 12-8 win over UPenn.
