👀 The Headliner: Virginia, Johns Hopkins, Denver Eliminated

The storyline that stole the show this weekend.

The preseason No. 6, No. 8 and No. 10 teams have failed to qualify for the 2025 NCAA Tournament.

Virginia finished 0-4 in the ACC and misses the conference tournament (and NCAA tournament) after a chaotic overtime loss to Duke.

Virginia was a team I didn’t have a lot of faith in at the start of the season, and I even said I thought they wouldn’t make the NCAA tournament in my “10 Predictions for the 2025 NCAA Lacrosse Season” article.

On paper, they just didn’t have the talent as in years past, especially offensively, a fact I thought was being overlooked by a lot of people.

Johns Hopkins’ tournament aspirations have ended after losing 12-11 in the Big Ten tournament quarterfinals to Penn State.

After starting the season 6-2, the Blue Jays lost six straight, and like the Cavaliers, went winless in their conference.

But perhaps the most surprising exit was Denver. Making the Final Four last season, the Pioneers fell 18-11 to Marquette on Friday to knock Denver out of the Big East conference tournament (which they are hosting).

The Big East has been the most chaotic conference this season, and this was just the icing on the cake.

On top of all of that, we will likely see Yale (preseason No. 9) miss out on the NCAA tournament unless they run the table in the Ivy League tournament as the #4 seed, and we there’s a possibility we see Syracuse (preseason No. 2) miss the tournament as well if they lose to Notre Dame on Friday.

That could be half of the preseason top 10 teams that fail to make the NCAA Tournament. Fun!

🤝 The Supporting Cast

The things that weren't maybe the star of the weekend, but still important.

1. CJ Kirst Breaks NCAA Goals Record

I’m sure you’ve seen this everywhere on social media. But in case you haven’t, Kirst broke the goal record on Saturday with a goal less than one minute into the contest against Dartmouth.

Very cool!

2. Conference Tournaments are Set

The Patriot League quarterfinals are being played today, but let’s take a look at the conference semifinals that are set.

Thursday, May 1:

  • Ohio State vs Rutgers at 5:00 PM

  • Georgetown vs Marquette at 6:00 PM

  • Maryland vs Penn State at 7:30 PM

  • Villanova vs Providence at 9:00 PM

Friday, May 2:

  • Cornell vs Yale at 4:00 PM

  • Notre Dame vs Syracuse at 5:00 PM

  • Princeton vs Harvard at 6:30 PM

  • North Carolina vs Duke at 8:00 PM

Will be a very fun two days, and a very fun weekend!

🎯 Quick Hits

The weekend's standout plays, hustle moments, and everything in between.

UNC’s Brevin Wilson stings the corner.

Princeton’s Peter Buonanno with the toe drag.

Cross crease save from UPenn’s Emmet Carroll.

📈 On the Rise

Spotlighting players and teams who are setting themselves up for big things ahead.

1. Liam Burke (Midfield - Johns Hopkins) 🐦

Selected to wear Jeremy Huber’s #19 jersey as a freshman, Burke was a spark plug late in the season for the Blue Jays.

All five of his goals came in conference play, and he finished his freshman season with four points (2G, 2A) against Penn State.

Beyond that, Burke also takes wings and just brings a certaiin energy whenever he touches the field.

He figures to play a bigger role for the Blue Jays in 2025.

2. Tomas Delgado (Midfield - Duke) 👿

Delgado’s first two goals off the season came on Saturday against UVA, including the game-tying goal with less than five minutes left.

Duke has been playing around with its second midfield for some time, and if Delgado can keep producing, that will be massive the Blue Devils to solidify this line.
